GolfDriverReviews Editor’s Review

Callaway has added the Diablo Edge driver to their arsenal for the 2010 golf season. As you would expect from Callaway this driver is designed to be smooth hitting and deliver maximum distance and accuracy. The Diablo Edge is all titanium and fused together using a special acid reduction method to help reduce drag and excess weight, while retaining strength and stability. The result is big distance, with ultimate forgiveness for miss hits. This driver also looks and sounds good.

There are many player reviews out there for the Diablo Edge as well as other recent Callaway models including the FT-iZ and FT-9, and it’s really hard to find anything negative being said. As a result we highly recommend the Callaway Diablo Edge driver with a strong 5 star rating.

The Good

  • Easy to hit – the special 4 piece fused design make the Callaway Diablo Edge driver a dream to hit.
  • Accurate – a nice benefit from the hyperbolic face technology is increased accuracy even on miss hits.
  • Solid feel – the Diablo is designed well and you really feel how solid it is at impact.
  • Smooth – aerodynamically designed to reduce wind resistance makes this driver a smooth swing
  • Forgiving – the design helps keep those miss hits in the fairway.
  • Good-looking – the design features are nice, and there is a z engraved on the sweet spot on the face of the club, as well as an alignment marker on the top of the head of the standard model.

The Bad

  • High Spin rate – this can reduce ball roll on your drives
  • Head shape – the shape is a bit unusual, with a pointed section in the rear, which can turn off many people

Models

Callaway Golf’s current driver lineup for the 2009 and 2010 golf season includes the following models:

Model Average Consumer Rating Number of Reviews Model Year
Diablo Edge 4.9 25+ 2010
Callaway FT-iZ IMIX Driver 4.8 40+ 2010
Callaway FT Tour 4.9 15+ 2010
FT-9 4.6 175+ 2009

Technology Features

The all titanium Diablo Edge driver is specifically designed to increase your distance off the tee. Cobra has several technological features on this driver that give it a unique edge.

callaway-fused-titanium

Fused Titanium

4 piece fused design – All four pieces, the crown, cupface, sole, and internal weight of the club head are fused together precisely and accurately to ensure that the weight is positioned optimally in the club head. This results in a deeper CG and a smoother, more balanced swing, as well as the largest sweet spot, and highest MOI of any Callaway titanium driver.

callaway-hyperbolic-face-cup

Hyperbolic Face Cup

Hyperbolic, chemically milled face cup – all unwanted material that may add drag to the club or unnecessarily increase its weight, has been removed through this acid chemical reduction process. The result is variable thickness of the face which causes an increase in ball speed off the face of the club. You will notice this even on off-center hits, where you can achieve greater distance with the Diablo Edge.

callaway-aerodynamic-design

Aerodynamically designed body – this helps to reduce drag on the downswing and generate a high impact speed on contact. Drag is reduced up to 8% on the Callaway Diablo Edge driver versus other 460cc drivers on the market.

S2H2 Technology – (standard model only) This bit of Callaway tech shortens the hosel and lets the shaft tip move through the club head to the sole. Moving the tip of the shaft closer to the center of the clubface creates more control and improves the feel of the club.

Callaway offers the Diablo in a standard and a Tour model. Both drivers have the four piece titanium design, the hyperbolic face cup and the aerodynamic body shape. The standard model has Callaway’s S2H2 technology which takes weight away from the hosel and moves it around the outside of the driver for increased stability. In the Tour model, the hosel is full length, and the face shows less progression.

GolfDriverReviews Consumer Reviews Summary

Summary of the most helpful positive reviews:

Players really love how the ball shoots off the club head and the added distance that goes with that. There were some reports of 10 plus yards increase in distance off the tee. There were many comments about how much straighter drives were with the Diablo Edge and how forgiving it is on miss-hits. Golfers also like the solid feel of this driver and how they were able to get the extra distance without having to muscle the club.

Summary of the most helpful negative reviews:

Several reviewers didn’t see any change is distance with this club. Players also wanted to see an alignment mark added to the top of the club head. (The marker can be found on the standard but not the tour model.)
