The Callaway golf driver has come a long way from the time of the company’s inception. In 1982, a year after Ely Callaway sold his $14m Callaway Vineyard and Winery; he saw hickory-shafted wedges and putters in a golf shop in California. In 1983, he purchased stakes in Hickory Stick USA, became half-owner, renamed the company Callaway Hickory Stick USA, made himself President and CEO, and moved it to Cathedral City, California, where he personally delivered golf clubs from his Cadillac’s trunk.

With tech guru Richard Helmstetter, the company’s Chief Club Designer, Callaway became the first to use computer-controlled milling machines. The intent was to establish uniform flatness on their putter’s surfaces. In 1988, the Callaway Hickory Stick USA company officially became Callaway Golf Company. With the introduction of Core S2H2 technology in 1988, Callaway’s sales escalated and by the end of 1990, the S2H2 drivers hit number one on the Senior PGA Tour.

In the year 2000, Arnold Palmer joined the company and in 2001, Ely Callaway retired as President and CEO of Callaway Golf. Phil Mickelson, Annika Sorenstam and Arnold Palmer (all championship golfers) are part of Callaway Golf Company’s roster of professionals who have used and endorsed Callaway’s clubs.

Callaway’s Goal

Ely Callaway had a desire to assist golfers, from novice to professional, to be more successful in the game. When Ely passed away on July 5, 2001 of pancreatic cancer, his philosophy and mission of helping all golfers to strike the ball with the best manufactured clubs possible, was carried on. All clubs are tested to confirm optimum capacity performance, with goals to surpass its predecessor. This attitude carries over in the testing of all their products.

Callaway continues to use advanced technology, while providing several options with its products, so that individual golfers play can perform in their style with ease, comfort and confidence, using the clubs that are best suited to them. The feel, comfort, distance and accuracy, as well as optimizing shot shape to suit each individual’s game must be consistent, so that each ball will become airborne in any condition upon the golf course and from any lie angle. This remains Callaway’s goal.

Here are some of the latest hot drivers coming out of Callaway in the last year.

Callaway RAZR Hawk Driver 2011 is a Superb Club

Callaway teamed up with Lamborghini (quality car manufacturer) to create a golf club driver that is superb. The confidence golfers enjoy with this club is evident in the reviews. The new material that Callaway and Lamborghini created to construct this driver is called Forged Composite. It is located in the crown and the sole of the golf club.

The design of the driver allows a player to control the club in a way that has not existed before. The Forged Composite material tends to be stronger and lighter than titanium so that it can provide superb ball control. Also the majority of manufacturers adhere to longer shaft configurations today; however, Callaway went a step beyond by pairing the new material with a 46 shaft that is ultra light. The ultra light shaft and the extremely light club head are a winning combination.

In times past, the standard shaft measured 44 inches long, before it was bumped up to 45 inches long. When standard shafts went to 46 inches long, the majority of mid to high range handicappers struggled with controlling the shot shape of their ball and begin to lose control of the golf club. Callaway addresses this longer shaft problem by using lighter materials that are easier to control.

The Benefits of the RAZR Hawk Driver

Advanced technology using Forged Composite material

23 million carbon-fibers reinforce the club head

Hyperbolic Face Technology to improve ball impact on the club face

Ultra light shaft

Ultra light, aerodynamic head shape

Large head size – 460cc

Stronger and lighter than titanium

Spincast-nickle rear-weight pad and thin aluminum skid plate on sole to help straighten miss hits

Aldila RIP Graphite Shaft

Chemically-milled titanium cupface (improves face flexibility on off-center hits)

Two Models of the RAZR Hawk

There are two models with this club, the non-tour and tour.

Non-tour Head Features

Neutral bias or draw bias available

Neutral-biased – Offset hosel to square the clubface on impact

Draw-biased – One degree closed

Tour Head Features

One degree open

Silver metal, light hosel

Head 450cc

Looks like a traditional hosel golf club

What the Reviewers Say

Those who took time off the course to write a review gave this driver an ecstatic thumbs-up. One reviewer claims that on the course, “It’s a cannon; the 10.5 degree gives me a high drawing ball that carries a long way, then hits the ground running.” Another reviewer states that his fellow golfers say he is hitting the ball 25-30 yards further. Another golfer comments that players with a faster swing will benefit from choosing a stiffer shaft and concludes that the club has great control as well.

Overall Opinion of Golfers

Accurate

Solid feel

Good grip

Easy to hit

Forgiving

None of the reviewers had anything negative to say about this driver.

Callaway Diablo Octane and Diablo Octane Tour

The other driver to come out of the Callaway shop recently is the Diablo Octane. Although other manufacturers have forsaken using carbon fiber in production, Callaway prefers to use this lightweight material in the Octane to control the club head’s center of gravity. Callaway uses the carbon fiber more precisely than other manufacturers to make this work. The shape of the Octane is also very appealing. Here are some of the features you can expect on this fantastic piece of equipment.

Weighs a light 195 grams

Constructed of lightweight carbon-fiber crown

Head has low CG (center of gravity) – off-center hits are stabilized resulting in long and straighter drives

46 inch shaft to increase swing speed

Cup face milled chemically to improve ball speed coming off of impact

Reviews for the Diablo Octane

Here are a few of the things golfers are saying about the Diablo Octane.

“Impressive”
“Best-looking driver”
“Perfect distance and forgiveness”
“Hit this any place on the clubface, and it will still go like a center strike.”
“Everyone wants to try my club.”
“It’s the best Callaway driver ever and light weight too.”
“Impressive shot making”

Reviewers love this club, with one stating that there is a wide variety of stock shafts to choose from, so you can get fitted with an excellent shaft without the extra charge associated with a custom shaft.

Another reviewer claims that with the Diablo he hits the ball further and more accurately, driving 300 yards up from 285. Some of his furthest drives ranged between 339 from 345.

FT Tour

Another popular Callaway driver is the FT Tour. Here is what you can expect using this piece of equipment.

Higher ball speeds and hence longer distance

Strong, powerful trajectories

Accuracy, workability and feel

The ball speed is increased and it has impressive distance gains. The FT Tour is a high performance driver with a conventional shape.

Irons and Hybrids

RAZR irons feature technology that moves the center of gravity in the club head so that it’s deeper down and lower to the ground. The clubface is also integrated and built using a cavity system that is undercut to maximize the ball speed. Hybrids have a zero roll design that helps golfers hit the ball higher and longer. The design is such that it balances distance, feel and workability.

GolfDriverReviews Editor’s Review

The cool new forged titanium that Srixon uses for its Z-TX driver is really turning some heads. Not only does this driver look good, with its silver trim and black racing highlights, but it also delivers on the tee.
In testing and reviews, the full range of handicappers were able to get some nice distance gains and additional control. Amongst this group, the power hitters and low handicappers seemed to see the largest of the distance increases, with 5-9 yards extra on average.

The extra control of this “Tour Extreme” Srixon driver wooed the mid to lower handicappers in reviews. They saw comparable distance increases to others of the latest drivers on the market, but they felt that they were getting better control and workability with the Srixon Z-TX driver.

Srixon is best known for their golf balls, many PGA tour pros are hitting them, and it now looks like Srixon is coming of age with their drivers as well. We love the technology in the Z-TX and give it a strong 4 star rating.

The Good

Sleek look – we like the design of this club, it just cries distance. It also comes with a gorgeous faux black leather head cover.

Great shaft – the stock shaft on the Srixon Z-TX is the Mitsubishi Diamana, which is a very high quality graphite shaft.

Stable – expect great stability at impact, especially on miss hits.

Great for mid to low handicappers – although the Z-TX is good for all players, better golfers and power hitters seem to get a lot of benefit from this club. As you get better and better at golf, you start to see smaller incremental improvements, so if you can get a driver that will on average give you another 5-9 yards off the tee, then jump on it.

The Bad

Sound – impact sound is described as hollow or empty

Expensive – priced at $499 new, the Z-TX is at the high end for golf drivers.

Technology Features

Srixon has enlarged the coefficient of restitution (COR) on the club face of the Z-TX driver by 5% which has increased its distance, forgiveness and accuracy. Srixon utilizes a variable face design called Starburst to achieve this effect which also helps to increase the trampoline effect of this driver. The Z-TX driver club head is made of a new rolled titanium material called Super Ti-X51, which has a very low density and is highly elastic. The combination of the Starburst variable face design and the new light gravity material results in the largest and most effective sweet spot that you’ll find on any Srixon driver. You’ll find maximum forgiveness and less loss in power on miss hits.

The club head body of the Srixon Z-TX driver is also designed using specialized low density titanium that combines with the TWIN CAM design of its sole to create an extremely high moment of inertia (MOI). The specialized material helps Srixon move 11 grams of weight to the outer areas of the club head and further stabilize the club head at impact. You’ll find that Srixon has fine tuned its club head for each type of loft offered, yielding the best spin characteristics and the most optimal launch angle for golfers of all ability levels.

To further help golfers on miss hits, Srixon has added a patent pending 6 part roll and bulge design on the clubface. The effect is a higher launch angle and decreased side spin even when the ball is hit outside of the face center. This helps you really control the ball better on miss hits. To assist you with alignment, the Srixon Z-TX club head has a straight top line shape for additional consistency.

GolfDriverReviews Consumer Reviews Summary

Summary of the most helpful positive reviews:

Many golfers feel that the club face design helps them to straighten out their drives, hooks especially, and miss hits have relatively little loss of distance. Golfers say it is a very consistent and forgiving club. They also like the square set up and the overall look of the club. Many golfers with higher swing speeds said they were able to get some good extra distance, some were looking at 5-9 yards extra on average.

Summary of the most helpful negative reviews:

Several golfers say they don’t get a lot of roll on the ball after it lands, but the carry is good. There also seems to be a bit of a draw bias for this driver. A couple of golfers say it feels a little light at contact. There was also some talk about the sound being weak and kind of hollow or empty.

Hippo golf started in 1989, growing out of Howson Sports. It is based in the UK and is the largest golf brand based in Europe. Some of the other brands under the Hippo umbrella include Beast, Giant, and Impact.

Hippo Golf’s signature club is the Hippo Hex 2 golf driver. This club offers a unique hexagonal shape that is different from anything else you’ll find on the market. But the big question is, “Does it deliver big results or is the design just a novelty item?” Well according to our research and consumer reviews, the Hippo Hex 2 does deliver.

Its unique shape helps to both cut down on drag and stabilize the club face at impact. This means you can generate faster club head speeds and hit the ball longer. You’ll also find the Hex 2 to be very forgiving on miss hits. Longer and straighter is a good combo and precisely what we want at GolfDriverReviews.org.

It may take a little time to get used to the look of the Hippo Hex 2, especially if you’ve been playing with a traditional pear shaped driver over the years, but the transition should be relatively easy once you get it out to the range and start hitting a few.

Hippo has already won several golf design awards in Europe and it has great sales in that market. You should start to see it growing in North American soon as well. Overall, we really like the Hippo and we definitely expect it to become more popular as the word gets out about what a great driver it is.

The Good

Accurate – the hexagonal shape and weighting on the back corners help to stabilize the Hippo Hex 2.

Large sweet spot – the shape again helps to enlarge the sweet spot and allow maximum forgiveness on miss hits.

Great feel – many golfers talk about the unique feel that they get from the Hex 2

Durable – it looks like Hippo has created a quality product

The Bad

Unusual design – the head shape takes some getting used to, but this can be a positive for those that want to be unique and stand out on the course. Of course the results should speak for themselves. If you hit it long and straight, who cares what it looks like.

Technology Features

The Hippo HEX 2 golf driver uses its unique hexagonal shape to increase the energy transfer from the club face to the ball and decrease side spin effects. The optimal weight distribution in the design helps to generate straight and long drives. The HEX 2 welds together several pieces in the head to create the thinnest possible face that produces maximum distance. It fits together a light woven carbon fiber radius side, a 6-4 titanium crown and sole, and a super hard forged beta ti face. The welded components and the thin face help to maximize the trampoline effect of the ball striking the club face.

The Hippo Hex 2 also stabilizes the weight around the club head by using 6 grams of extra weight at the rear corners. This helps to ensure a stable club head on miss hits. In addition to stability, the HEX 2 driver’s aerodynamic shape helps to reduce drag on the backswing and generate higher club speed at impact with the ball.

The grip on the Hippo Hex 2 is also unique in that that upper half is cord and the bottom half is a soft compound. This creates a fantastic feel and superb control even when it’s wet out. The shaft is proprietary as well, featuring high modulus graphite fibers.

GolfDriverReviews Consumer Reviews Summary

Summary of the most helpful positive reviews:

Most golfers say that the Hippo Hex 2 is one of the straightest clubs they have ever hit and very forgiving. Several were able to straighten out a pesky fade that had troubled them for a while. There was a recommendation to tee the ball high because of the weighting of the club, so that you can avoid too much backspin. Many owners were also able to get some great extra distance.

Summary of the most helpful negative reviews:

Many golfers felt that the look takes a little getting used to, but most really liked the appearance and results after hitting the Hex2 for a while. There was also one report of the bottom welding on the face cracking. Some golfers felt the Hex 2 was too loud as well.

The square head shape may take a little getting used to at first, just in terms of appearance, but once you get over that, the Machspeed STR8-Fit really lets you bust them out there straight. You’ll find that this driver is more accurate than most others on the market and you’ll love seeing a higher than average ball flight and extra distance.

The Good

Accurate – a large sweet spot and adjustable face technology means that this driver is one of the most accurate in play. Also, the head doesn’t twist as much through impact.

Great feel – hitting this club is easy and just feels good at impact.

Great distance – the additional swing speed you get from the aerodynamic design lets you really bust them out there. The Machspeed also has one of the highest average ball flights in its group, which helps to increase distance.

High quality – Nike has really built a strong reputation for quality since it entered the golf driver market.

Good value – You can pick up a used Machspeed in good condition for under $180.00.

The Bad

Head shape – this may take some getting used to for players who are used to a more traditional pear shape.

Sound – the metallic sound is a bit loud and can turn some heads.

Technology Features

The Nike SQ Machspeed Str8-Fit has 8 face angle options, ranging from 2 degrees open to 2 degrees closed. It allows players to dramatically shape their drives. Golfers can simply unscrew the club head, using a torque wrench that comes with it, and reattach the head in one of eight different settings. You can change the loft, lie angle, and face angle of the driver. The torque wrench has a LED indicator light and makes a sound to signal that the shaft and the STR8-FIT adaptor are fully secure and locked in place.

SQ Machspeed drivers are square shaped and designed to generate higher club head speeds than any other Nike driver by optimizing aerodynamics throughout the entire path of the swing. Nike has built these swing aerodynamics into the SQ MachSpeed by reducing drag on the club head and increasing airflow smoothly around all parts of the club. Nike calls these designs Powerbow and Sole Diffuser, and they help to promote faster acceleration of the club so that it can deliver maximum energy to the ball. Nike says that the number one thing that makes the ball go further is having faster ball speed.

Nike has also increased the forgiveness of the SQ Machspeed Str8-Fit by moving weight into the corners of the club head to create more stability at impact.

GolfDriverReviews Consumer Reviews Summary

What The Pros Are Saying

“When I looked at the shape of the club, I kind of laughed. I couldn’t believe that I was trying a driver that was so far from a classic shape. But I was shocked when I first saw the ball come off the face. I like the fact that I hit it farther (one of the shorter hitters on Tour, he laughs). With this driver I’ll be able to curve it and hit it about 10 yards farther. To the traditionalist, Leonard says, ‘Give it three or four balls.’ The initial glance is, ‘Oh, dear.’ Then it’s, ‘O.K., I get it.’” – Justin Leonard

Summary of the most helpful positive reviews:

Several golfers commented on how their accuracy has increased off the tee with the Machspeed driver. They also like that you can adjust the angle and loft degrees if you want to. Golfers also mentioned that they felt more confident at address and many were able to get extra distance off the tee (20 yards in some cases). There were also comments on the great sound at impact. Everyone was impressed with the new Nike technology in the Machspeed.

Summary of the most helpful negative reviews:

Some golfers have a tough time getting the STR8-Fit settings to work for their swing. Others say it can be too loud.

The Cleveland Launcher DST driver offers some great technology with its main focus being on lightening the weight of the club. It is the lightest club currently available, at 292 grams; a full 5-10% lighter than most drivers on the market. A lighter club means faster swing speeds and in turn longer distance.

The big question though is can you control a lighter club and faster swing speed? Cleveland has enhanced the design of the club face with a larger sweet spot and variable widths of material to help on miss hits. However, a club that could be 10% lighter than the one you are using now will take some getting used to. You’ll definitely need to practice with it to keep your accuracy. That said most of the reviews we read on this driver show that golfers really love it once they played a few rounds and hit a lot of balls at the driving range.

So, if you want the extra distance and are patient and willing to put in the time you need to adjust to the lightweight Cleveland Launcher, you should notice a sizeable increase (3-10 yards on average) in your distance off the tee. I’ll take that any day!

Technology Features

The Cleveland Launcher DST is the latest and best in the line of outstanding Cleveland drivers. It features a 0.5 millimeter thin crown that helps launch the ball very high by sloping down from the large club face. The DST increases the club head sweet spot and generates a high launch and low spin by having a 20 percent larger face than the first Cleveland Launcher model. It also has a traditional 460cc square face and the weighting is neutral.

The Cleveland Launcher DST has three major technology innovations that set it apart from other drivers on the market.

Sub 300g (292 grams) Ultralite Technology
The Cleveland DST is the lightest driver currently on the PGA tour, coming in 25 grams lighter (5-10%) than most standard drivers. What this means is that the typical golfer can generate an extra 3-4 miles per hour (MPH) on their swing speed. The faster your swing speed, the further you hit the ball. 3-4 mph translates to 3-10 more yards off the tee.

MaxCOR Face Technology
With this technology Cleveland has created a trampoline effect where you can get more distance and ball speed even on miss hits. Cleveland also redesigned the face of this club with variable degrees of thickness by moving 9 grams of weight from the face and repositioning it deeper and lower in the club head. This helps to create a higher MOI and a deeper center of gravity for straighter drives.

Diamana Ultralite Red 44 Shaft
The Cleveland DST has a longer (45.75″) and lighter (47g) shaft. This also helps to increase swing speed.

The Launcher DST Draw version has a club face that is 3 degrees closed and internal weighting to help generate a right to left ball trajectory for righties. The Launcher Tour version is slightly smaller at 430cc, has a face that is 2 degrees open, and internal weighting that help to generate a left to right ball trajectory. The Tour version also comes with a Mitsubishi White shaft that is 64 grams.

What The Pros Are Saying

“The Launcher DST line is so light, so fast and so long … Makes me wish the fine folks at Cleveland Golf would get in the fishin’-pole-makin’ business!” – Boo Weekley

Summary of the most helpful positive reviews:

Everyone seems to get some extra distance with the Cleveland Launcher DST driver; up to 20 yards in some cases! Golfers can really feel how much lighter this club is and really like the additional swing speed. They also say it’s really solid off the face so you can control the ball and not get wild with a faster swing. Everyone seems to like the sound of the driver on impact. There were many comments on the high quality of Cleveland’s products, especially the DST.

Summary of the most helpful negative reviews:

One player commented that he would like to see a mark on the top of the driver head to show where the mid-point of the face is. Others talked about how the DST is very similar to the earlier version of the Launcher, but they could definitely feel the weight difference.
