The Ping Driver – 50 years of Golf Driver Advances, Latest Reviews
Ping has offered revolutionary golf drivers and equipment for over 50 years. The Ping G10, and Ping Rapture drivers have won numerous awards and boast impressive technology.
Ping is a classic American success story. Karsten Solheim, a former GE engineer started Ping in his garage in 1959. He focused initially on putters, creating the Ping 1A and the Anser line of putters in the 1950′s and 1960′s. The Anser putter went on to post over 500 professional golf wins, the most of any putter. Ping commemorates its putter professional victories by creating a gold platted putter for the winner, engraved with their name and the tournament, and one for its “vault”. The gold putter vault is said to be a virtual Fort Knox, with over 2,500 gold putters on display.
Ping’s innovation, quality and service apply to all of its golf products, including golf drivers. Today, Solheim’s youngest son, John A. Solheim heads the Phoenix based, family owned Ping. Karsten Solheim, who passed away in 2000, is the only golf club manufacturer to be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.
The Technology Behind Ping Drivers
Ping was built on sound engineering principles, based on the aerospace and computing background and skills of its founder. Ping engineers develop metal woods in a virtual world, on super-computers using the latest software, to ensure the highest level of performance before the golf drivers ever reach the first tee. They look at factors such as moment of inertia (MOI), center of gravity location, crown structure and face thickness, and they even study the acoustics of the driver to ensure it has a powerful sound and feel. Rest assured all their golf drivers make a “ping” sound – or something very similar to that.
Ping was one of the first manufacturers to custom fit drivers to golfer’s unique swings. They started this in the 1960′s, and many golf pros went on to win soon after receiving custom fitted Ping equipment. Today, Ping is the undisputed fitting leader among manufacturers, with thousands of fitting systems at golf shops and courses around the world. They also have a PGA-certified training program that instructs golf professionals on how to properly fit Ping equipment to every golfer’s swing. Surprisingly, custom fit Ping golf drivers don’t cost any more or take any longer to build. Ping has streamlined their production process so that they can ship your golf driver, custom built to your exact specifications, within 48 hours.
Ping’s newest drivers currently under production include the Ping G10 Driver, the Ping Rapture V2, the Ping G10 Draw, and the Ping Rhapsody. All of Ping’s golf drivers feature a large 460cc club head, and a new thin crown pattern that repositions weight inside the club head to optimize the center of gravity location. The drivers also have a larger profile head which means a taller face that increases the effective hitting area. The bigger the hitting area, the less precise you have to be on every swing and the more accuracy you can achieve.
The Ping Rapture V2 Driver uses a multi-metal design of tungsten and titanium to distribute weight to the back of the club head, and position the center of gravity low and away from the face.
The Ping G10 Draw Driver has its hosel (the part of the driver where the head attaches to the shaft) positioned farther forward than the standard G10 to promote a right to left ball flight. This helps players that naturally slice the ball, straighten it out a bit more.
The Ping Rhapsody Driver is engineered to improve the games of women golfers with slower swing speeds. Ball flight is elevated using a higher lofted club head and more flexible shaft.
