Srixon Z-RW Driver Review

26 September 2009 4,205 views No Comment

The Srixon Z-RW driver features innovative 4 zone face technology that makes it one of the most exciting golf drivers on the market today.

srixon-z-rw-driverSrixon is an impressive company that has been designing golf balls and golf drivers for over 70 years. They hold over 500 golf ball patents and were one of the pioneers and early patent holders for the technology that makes up today’s modern high COR drivers.

One of the top golf drivers currently in production at Srixon is the Srixon Z-RW driver. First introduced in 2007, this golf driver has been extremely popular, making the Golf Digest Hot List for 2008.

Technology Overview

The Srixon Z-RW driver features a “Starburst Power Face” design. Now don’t think about the flavor candies here, even though you are sure to get a good taste in your mouth after striking the ball with this driver. The Starburst Power face is really unique; we have yet to find this tech in even the large golf driver manufacturers. Basically Srixon has divided the club face into four zones, each with a slightly different bulge and roll configuration. The idea is that miss hits in the four zones can be corrected by adjusting the side spin on the ball through the bulge and roll design on the golf driver. In other words, if you don’t hit the golf ball in the exact center, in a standard club it would spin off as a hook or slice, but with the redesigned quadrants in the Srixon Z-RW, the ball would spin less and hence fly straighter on the miss hits. Pretty cool tech.

Specs

The Srixon Z-RW is designed to keep the club’s weight low and its strength high. (Just like we all strive for with our physiques.) Srixon does this by using a multi-material combination of Titanium and Tungsten. The tungsten helps to redistribute the weight in the club head to lower the center of gravity, which helps to increase club head speed.

The Srixon Z-RW also comes with a standard Fujikara graphite shaft and several custom shaft options. The standard shaft has a low torque and stiffness profile that is designed to lower ball spin and increase the ball’s trajectory. See the article on golf shaft selection for more information.

The Srixon Z-RW driver has a club head size of 460cc and comes in lofts of 8.5, 9.5, 10.5, and 11.5 degrees. For more on golf driver loft selection, see our article.

Srixon has 15 PGA Tour pros currently on its team, some using golf clubs, some using golf balls, some using both. They also have many other pros from the Nationwide, Champions, and LPGA Tours endorsing and using their products. One of the top ranked players is Jim Furyk who has been featured prominently in Srixon ads and has been very influential in the design of their golf equipment. Furyk has been ranked as high as #2 in 2006 and has 13 total wins on the Tour.

Positive Comments: Most of the comments talk about how “hot” this driver is. Meaning you get a lot more distance and ball spring off the clubface with the Srixon Z-RW than many of the big brands on the market. Other comments talk about the forgiveness of the club, which is largely due to the expanded sweet spot and the Starburst Powerface 4 quadrant design.

Negative Comments: There were some mentions that the club is too light. Most golfers though prefer a club as light as possible to generate the greatest swing speed, and hence the longest distance.
